Classroom Diagram

When one first glances at this layout, one may notice ample floor space. This is an intentional decision. I am most comfortable when the area I am in is as open and clutter free as possible. Therefore, I want to provide my students with as much space as possible to work. While designing this layout, it was taken into account the economy of steps from one location to another. It was a deliberate attempt to make moving from one location to another as simple as possible. Students with disabilities were also taken into account during design. These students should be easily able to move throughout the classroom with the same freedom as any other student. Finally, fire drills and exit procedures were taken into account. With this layout, students should not have to line up weaving through desks or centers.

Student seating is the next large component of this design. I chose to place the students in dyads within the classroom taking into consideration the constructivist approach to learning. Dyads would allow independent and communal construction of learning during the class time. This arrangement also allows me to partner students in a way that will bring positive outcomes to both parties. Furthermore, this layout allows students to work communally while maintaining a clear view of the whiteboard or display area at the front of the room without having to constantly turn during a direct instruction. Also, the teacher’s desk is placed in a location where all aspects of the classroom can be seen without hindrance.

Classroom ambiance was the next aspect taken into consideration during design. It is important to me that students are invited and welcomed into the classroom daily. Therefore, music would be a large part of the classroom setting. Also, lighting is another factor that I consider important. It is important for me to have natural light within the classroom. If classroom location does not permit natural light, soft lighting from lamps would suffice in addition to classroom lighting. Wall space is another issue examined. It is important to me that students can display their projects, art, writing etc. within the class. Therefore, bulletin boards are of importance to display these items. However, I do not want to over stimulate the students with numerous items and posters. Finally, having plants in the room is important to me for setting a natural feeling to the room. However, if severe pollen allergies exist in the classroom these would easily be removed.

Storage is another concern to consider. It is important to me that manipulatives, reading materials, and centers be located in places that do not interfere with other learning occurring within the classroom. For this reason, multiple bookshelves and storage shelves are placed around the room. I feel that if each of these storage areas were located together that they would hinder classroom flow.

This classroom is designed with the consideration of the general needs within a K-6th grade classroom. However depending on grade level, classroom size, and Individual Education Plans, modifications to this classroom can easily be made to provide a suitable learning environment for all learners.
